Behind the Scenes: How We Prepare Our Photo Shoots
Have you ever wondered how Chaussures Fillion’s professional photos—those you see on our website and social media—are created? A successful shoot is more than just a pretty picture. It’s careful planning, strategic choices, and… sometimes a little improvisation!
Here’s a glimpse at the key steps behind every one of our photo shoots:
It all starts with a theme, each photo session is inspired by a specific vibe—seasonal moods, current trends, or the spirit of a particular brand. We begin by building a moodboard: color palette, décor style, textures, clothing, footwear poses (with or without models)—nothing is left to chance. This step is essential to ensure visual consistency and to convey strong emotion through our visuals.
For example, a summer theme might highlight warm light, a sunny setup, and relaxed, natural poses, while a fall shoot could lean into earthy tones, rich textures, and a cozy, moody ambiance. Our marketing and creative teams collaborate closely to deliver a high-quality result.
Product selection
Choosing the shoes to photograph is a key step. We select them based on several criteria: quantities purchased, distribution among our stores, recent arrivals, or seasonal must-haves. We make sure to represent both women’s and men’s collections to showcase the diversity of our offering. And of course, we don’t forget the accessories—because they complete the look perfectly.
Models or not?
Depending on the project, we decide whether or not the shoot requires models to put the shoes into context. Sometimes, a simple neutral or colored backdrop with carefully selected props is all it takes to set the tone. It all depends on the desired effect—lifestyle, studio, product-focused, etc.
As with our product selection, we care deeply about representing our clientele authentically. Models are chosen with several criteria in mind, including the target age group for each collection. Whether we're shooting kids’, women’s or men’s styles, we always select profiles that reflect our audience—keeping the visuals relatable, credible, and beautiful.
Location scouting: indoors or outdoors?
At the same time, we choose the location. Indoor shoots, in our studio or a styled space, offer better control over lighting and conditions. Time is often tight, so everything must be planned in advance: the photo order, the décor, the light sources... Every detail is accounted for to make the most of each minute.
In our studio, a few well-chosen props—like armchairs, curtains, or decorative items—add texture and depth to the scene.
For outdoor shoots, the ambiance is more natural, authentic, and varied, but also more unpredictable. Since we’re showcasing quality, functional products, we love the real-world context that outdoor scenes provide. Weather, lighting, or everyday surprises can disrupt the plan, though. That’s why we often break our shoots into short sessions spread across several days, with flexible time slots to adapt to conditions and model availability. Balancing it all is one of our marketing director’s hidden talents!
Before any outdoor session, scouting is key. We look for distinctive locations with interesting backdrops—brick walls, sidewalks, urban elements—that bring energy to the composition. That said, the most important rule is that these elements must enhance the photo, not distract from the product.
Pro tip: Early mornings, when the light is softer and the skies a bit cloudy, are often the best times to capture the most stunning shots.
Outfit planning
Next comes styling. We carefully coordinate clothing and accessories (sometimes based on model measurements) to highlight the footwear and reflect our brand identity. Looks need to complement the shoes while considering body shape, location, and photo direction. Our team includes members with strong styling experience—a real asset when it comes to selecting outfits that flatter the model and elevate the shoes. Every detail is chosen to ensure a polished, striking, and cohesive look.
Pairing for a better look
Once the products, outfits, and locations are selected, there’s one last key step: matching the looks with the shoot setting. This part takes strategic thinking because it directly impacts the campaign’s visual consistency and aesthetic appeal. It’s not just about placing shoes in a space—it’s about creating harmony between the product style, wardrobe, colors, and atmosphere. Every detail helps tell the right visual story, and careful planning ensures the final images reflect our brand identity.
This is where our artistic director truly shines!
Organizing the shot list
Like all other steps, planning the day of the shoot is crucial. It helps things run smoothly and avoids wasting time. That means creating a precise shot list, taking into account logistical details like set changes, wardrobe changes, desired angles (close-up or wide), and lighting adjustments.
For indoor shoots, especially with multiple décors or accessories, good organization is everything. For outdoor shoots, even more flexibility is needed: we consider travel routes between locations, the schedule of natural light, outfits, and even the busyness of public areas if we’re not shooting on a reserved site.
To top it off, we always pack a “just-in-case” kit for outdoor sessions—wipes, reflectors, step stools, umbrellas, spray bottles, broom, dustpan… You never know what conditions you’ll face, so it’s best to come prepared!
In the end, every beautiful image is the result of detailed planning—from product selection to location scouting and styling. Each step is thoughtfully executed to showcase our collections and deliver visuals that inspire... and a refined presentation. Products that spark desire. A selection that invites you to take action.
